Like many girls and women, you may experience abdominal pain at the beginning, middle, or end of your period. When it happens, all you want to do is curl up in bed like a little ball. We understand you. This is why we've come up with a few tips on how to reduce menstrual cramps!
WHAT CAUSES MENSTRUAL PAIN?
Menstrual cramps, or primary dysmenorrhoea, can be caused by prostaglandins.. Prostaglandins are substances that cause the uterus to contract and expel blood. It is often these contractions that cause painful cramps.
Dysmenorrhea can be primary or secondary. In the second case, they can be caused by gynaecological disorders suchas endometriosis and must be monitored by a doctor.
HOW TO HELP CRAMPS : OUR TIPS TO RELIEVE MENSTRUAL PAIN
Even though menstrual cramps can be very painful, there are many little "tricks" that can help relieve them! Here are the ones that work best for us.
1. 1. Get Moving, While Staying Relaxed
We know this is not the first thing you want to do when you suffer from period pain, but be aware that movement helps oxygenate the body and releases endorphins which soothe the pain. Of course, not all sports are recommended. We are not telling you to play hockey or run a marathon! Instead, choose a daily activity such as yoga, or walk at your own pace for 30 to 45 minutes! You can also try breathing exercises; they are the key to reconnecting with your body and living in full harmony with what's happening inside it.
2. Take a Warm Bath
Heat is a very effective way to help relieve menstrual cramps. We suggest taking a hot bath or applying a heating pad on your abdomen during the peaks of pain! Be aware that for some women, cold is more effective in reducing period cramps. If this is the case for you, try applying an ice pack instead.
3. Adopt a Balanced Diet
You probably want to treat yourself when you suffer from menstrual cramps, which is understandable! However, you should try to avoid bad fats and foods that are too salty and greasy, which can make your pain even worse. Instead, choose fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in magnesium, potassium, calcium and vitamin E.
And for those who like to drink coffee, or other caffeinated beverages, we advise against these habits during your period! They have the unfortunate tendency to worsen period cramps. ee it as an opportunity to take a little break that is beneficial for your metabolism!
4. Discover the Benefits of Medicinal Plants
There are a variety of medicinal plants that are effective to help period cramps! Some of them, such as valerian, can act as an antispasmodic. Others, like ginger, act as anti-inflammatory. Those little home remedies can therefore have great counter-pain effects.
The camomile, raspberry, yarrow and many other plants can be effective to reduce period cramps. Try them in infusions, gemmotherapy (plant buds medicine), or any other preparation that is good for your body.
Finally, know that we are all different and that each woman reacts differently to the same medicinal plants. If you want to try it for the first time, don't hesitate to consult an herbalist!
5. Take Time for Yourself!
In the case of persistent chronic pain, we recommend therapeutic or wellness treatments! No matter which form you choose, taking time for yourself at this time of the month will help you experience your period differently. After all, your body has been working hard all month, so why not listen to it and rest?
Acupuncture can also be effective to help period cramps. This ancestral Chinese medicine works on the meridians of the body to rebalance it and stimulate areas in need. One of its main benefits is the relief of short- and long-term pain..
